Lemuria
Lemuria
May 9, 2024 - May 13, 2024
The Lemuria was a festival of the ancestors in ancient Rome. Primarily, it was a time for celebrating the heroic fathers and mothers of one's own house and clan, but it was also a time for acknowledging the heroic fathers and mothers of the Roman state as well — a kind of patriotic spirit week.
Today, it is useful for pagans to consider three kinds of ancestors in ritual space: first there are our own personal ancestors. Next there are the 'ancestors' of our faith and spiritual practice, the mortals whose teachings serve as our guide; and the 'ancestors' of our nation, who created a country in which we have a place and a right to practice our faith. Finally, there are the ancestors of the human race generally — who domesticated the plants and animals that feed us, who made the tools that give us work and health, and invented the music and art that we cherish. There is rich and fertile ground here for all sorts of ritual, from the personal to the patriotic to the deeply spiritual... take advantage of all of it.

Maia & Mercury
Maia & Mercury
May 15, 2024
Maia was the goddess of memory, and the mother of Hermes/Mercury— the trickster god of the Greco-Roman pantheon, and the deity in charge of thieves, merchants, magicians, and travelers. Together they are celebrated on this day.
In ritual alone and in group, emphasize the union of memory and record-keeping with the work of businesses and magic-making. Use writing — one of Hermes's arts and a gift he made to his mother — as a ritual tool for making magic. Shower blessings on businesses and on people's workplaces, for prosperous years and safe working environments.

Mary Magdalen
Mary Magdalen
May 24, 2024
For many alternative Christians, Mary Magdalen is understood to be Jesus's bride at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of his children. She is a prophetess and a divine in her own right, and the putative author of one of the so-called Gnostic Gospels.
She is included in this calendar as a formal link between the Christian upbringing of many modern pagans, and their present practices, and as a reminder that all of Christianity can fit inside of a pagan worldview, as Alan Watts pointed out in the 1960s. Ritual on this day can help pagans harmonize the connections between past and present practice, and give them a way to reclaim a part of their spirituality that they may have denied.
