The Song of Amergin

Amergin[1] Glúingel (“white knees”) (also spelled Amhairghin Glúngheal) or Glúnmar (“big knee”) is a bard, druid and judge for the Milesians in the Irish Mythological Cycle. He was appointed Chief Ollam of Ireland by his two brothers the kings of Ireland. A number of poems attributed to Amergin are part of the Milesian mythology.

    Dionysius (City Dionysia)

    October 3, 2023

The September festival of Bacchus, also called the City Dionysia, was specifically the festival of the wine-god in his role as the patron of the theater. The theaters of ancient Greece and Rome usually had subsidized tickets for the poor, and assigned judges to hear and weigh the merits of individual plays.

Some pagan groups use this day specifically to stage plays or play-readings, and it's a good time of year to attend Shakespeare festivals outside or in. In ritual, the use of masks and theatrical effects is quite appropriate. To mimic the form and pattern of a Greek theater, shift from a circle to a half-circle, and assign no more than four speaking roles in your ritual for the day.

    Pandrosos

    October 18, 2023

Pandrosos, called "the all-refreshing one" was a hermaphroditic deity of sun and rain, or alternately the deified high priestess of Minerva the Roman goddess of wisdom. Associated with Apollo, (s)he presided over the harvest season's weather, and was implored to provide appropriate sun and rain for the ingathering of the year's food.

In ritual alone and with others, praise the good weather of this time of year lavishly, and give thanks for the good weather of the previous year. Celebrate with bread, wine, apples, and other produce of this time of year.

  • The Dioscuri: Castor & Pollux

    The Dioscuri: Castor & Pollux

    October 25, 2023

The Dioscuri, meaning "Sons of Zeus" or "Healing Gods" depending on who's doing the translation, were Castor and Pollux in Roman tradition, and Crispin/Crispianus in the Christian tradition. The Battle of Agincourt was fought on this day in 1415.

The Dioscuri were widely admired in the ancient world for centuries, and temples to them stood in many places. The were warriors to the Mycenaean Greeks and to Homer, healers to the Hellenistic Greeks of the years after Alexander, and magicians and miracle-workers to the Romans. Several traveling Christian Apostles were mistaken for the reappearance of the gods themselves, who had a habit of curing people for free, and then mysteriously vanishing. They were a symbol of men working in partnership.

In ritual alone and with others, give thanks to the strong but gentle men in your life, for responsible fathers and helpful brothers and the neighbor who ploughs your driveway in winter. It is a good time for the meeting of the partners of women in covens, or for the formation of men's groups.

    Samhain

    October 31, 2023

While not a Roman festival, most Pagans today note and celebrate Samhain/Halloween as a day of the dead and of the ancestors. There are often many public rituals that draw on the experiences of many traditions, and followers of this calendar should feel free to join these rituals.
